Tencent leads huge investment round in Bangkok insurtech startup Sunday that sees a number of global financial groups participate. The Thailand based company raised US$45 million in Series B funding to develop digital insurance services and boost its position in Southeast Asia. The funding also reflected increasing interest in online insurance technology across regional markets during the pandemic period.

Sunday Expands Its Insurance Technology Platform

Sunday started operations in 2017 and later became known as a full stack insurtech company. The business focuses on motor insurance, travel coverage, and digital underwriting systems. Unlike traditional insurance providers, Sunday manages several parts of the process inside one platform, including policy distribution and customer support.

The company built a customer base of around 1.6 million users. Its online services also include smartphone subscription programs and healthcare products for businesses. Sunday Health for Business was developed to help employers provide healthcare coverage for workers through digital systems.

Several investment firms joined the funding round together with Tencent:

  • SCB 10X
  • Vertex Growth
  • Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India
  • Quona Capital
  • Aflac Ventures
  • Z Venture Capital

The company explained that new investment funds would support technology improvements and expansion into additional Asian markets. Indonesia became one of the important targets for future growth because of increasing digital service demand in the insurance sector.

Artificial Intelligence Supports Sunday Services

Part of Sunday’s business model uses Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence technologies during underwriting processes. Digital systems help analyze customer information, insurance risks, and policy management more quickly than older manual systems. These technologies also support online customer experiences through mobile platforms and automated services.

The pandemic period increased public attention toward health-related insurance products in many Asian countries. Reports connected with the industry suggested that consumers became more interested in online insurance options after healthcare concerns grew during COVID–19 years.

Indonesia Became a Growth Target

Sunday announced plans to create more insurance distribution channels and agent networks inside Indonesia. The company expected that digital insurance demand in Southeast Asia would continue increasing as more people used online financial services.

Chief Executive Officer Cindy Kuo spoke about changing customer behavior during the funding announcement. She explained that awareness connected with health insurance continued growing, and many consumers became more comfortable purchasing insurance products online instead of using traditional office systems.
