Why Adelaide might secretly be Australia’s coolest city, according to insiders

THE CAPITAL South Australia’s Adelaide offers an almost utopian alternative to typical urban sprawl. Moats of lush parks surround a one-square-mile downtown filled with shops and restaurants. Beyond, the leafy suburbs give way to the Adelaide Hills, where koalas roam, and the sea.

Despite such a compact footprint, the city has a serious culinary edge, thanks in part to easily accessible fresh seafood, the region’s bounty of produce and the neighboring Barossa Valley wineries. Recently, chefs transplanted from China and Vietnam have infused diverse flavors into the small city of just over a million inhabitants. Best of all, it’s extremely easy to wander around Adelaide on foot, stumbling upon discoveries while enjoying long walks after a food coma.
