Top UN court rejects proposal to force Germany to stop arming Israel – POLITICO
Western intelligence officials and diplomats told POLITICO they believe Nicaragua brought the case against Germany to the U.N.’s highest court at Moscow’s request, speculating that Russia had the intent to undermine the authority of the ICJ by making it a venue for specious legal arguments.
Germany has rejected Nicaragua’s claims, with Tania von Uslar-Gleichen, director of international law at the German Foreign Ministry, saying “they have no basis in fact or law.”
In January, South Africa accused Israel of committing genocide in a separate case before the same court. The ICJ did not accept the assertion in a preliminary ruling, but warned Israel to ensure its forces do not commit acts of genocide in their war against Hamas.
