Hamas has taken more than 200 hostages in Israel. Here’s what you need to know.

Palestinian militants who attacked Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people, kidnapped more than 200 civilians and soldiers and returned them to the Gaza Strip. Israel took part in negotiations for the hostages’ release while leading military efforts to crush Hamas, the militant group that is holding most of them.

Why did Hamas take hostages?

Documents found on the bodies of dead militants at the sites of the October 7 attacks demonstrate a deliberate strategy to kill as many people as possible, Israeli officials said. Orders carried by the militants sent to a kibbutz stated that they should “kill as many individuals as possible and capture hostages until they receive further instructions.”
