What to do when you drop your gadget in the water

With so many people using smartphones, one of the worst things that can happen is accidentally dropping the device into water. You may accidentally drop it in a sink, toilet, or washing machine or get it wet in the rain. Whenever you drop your smartphone into the water, chances are that the device won’t start ever again. Wherever you face such a situation, several things can go wrong. Water or another liquid can cause internal damage to your phone. It may also cause the display or touchscreen error, or worse. Still, there are several steps you can take to minimize the damage and save your wet smartphone.

  1. If your device falls into the water, take it out and switch it off immediately. This can help you prevent the situation from getting worse and spot any potential damage to the internals. This is an important first step that should be done in cases like this, and that’s why we focus your attention on this step.
  2. After switching off your device, remove whatever you can from it. It includes removing the cases, covers, battery (if possible), SIM card, stylus, etc. Once all these things are removed, take tissue paper and wipe off every bit of moisture, including the screen, connectivity ports, battery, etc.
  3. Gently shake the device to get rid of water stuck in the headphone jack, charging ports, etc. Use a blower or a vacuum cleaner from a safe distance. Do not use the hair dryer because the heat can melt some parts and the circuit.
  4. Bury the smartphone in the uncooked rice and let it absorb moisture. If you don’t have any rise, you can put the smartphone inside an air-tight container along with silica gel sachets, which can absorb moisture better than rice. Wait for 48 hours to let the device dry completely and turn it on. If the damage is minimal, the device should boot and start functioning again. If this doesn’t happen, you can ask for professional help. If you need to recover data from your smartphone, you can restore mobile device files using a dedicated service from an expert team.

A lot of people take their smartphones with them while going to the bathroom or while washing clothes. Don’t repeat the same mistake. You’d better leave your phone somewhere in a dry place, away from water. It will help you prevent the risk of dropping your gadget in the liquid.
