Supergiant Games has just been dealt Hades to fans a detailed look at the game’s upcoming sequel. Seriously, the developer hosted a three-hour live stream who showed up Hades II gameplay, new features and mechanics, as well as new designs for its characters based on the gods of Greek mythology. Supergiant creative director Greg Kasavin and studio head Amir Rao demonstrated the abilities of the game’s new protagonist, Melinoë. Even though she is the sister of Zagreus, the protagonist of the first title, and Hades II is a direct sequel to the original, Kasavin and Rao have stated that players do not need to have prior knowledge of the first game and Greek mythology to enjoy it. Old fans, however, will find “delicious references” here and there.
Melinoë is a witch and assassin, who is proficient with her staff and can wield magic, and has a rather different playstyle than Zagreus, as shown in gameplay footage. Kasavin and Roe also introduced new gods like Apollo, returning gods like Aphrodite and Demeter, new resources and various environments in the game. They played the technical test version of Hades IIhowever, meaning that some environments and assets could still undergo changes before the final product is released.
The developer hopes to quickly resolve any technical issues players may encounter during technical testing so that the game can receive early access, which is expected to take place this spring.
