Rumor: PS5 Pro still scheduled for 2024, status update coming in September

There have been plenty of rumors swirling around regarding unconfirmed but likely Sony items for a long time, and Jeff Grubb has just provided the latest news. Discussing the PS5 Pro on his show Game Mess Mornings, the Giant Bomb regular said that the upgraded console is still headed our way before the end of the year, and not only that, but we could have a status report within a few weeks.

You can hear what he has to say on these topics in the video above. In response to the story that the PS5 Pro was an “open secret” among developers at Gamescom, Grubb says it’s still targeting 2024. “Last I heard,[the PS5 Pro]was still coming out this year,” he says.

He quickly backtracks on that claim, noting that he’s heard “more recently” about a State of Play — “not a Showcase, a State of Play” — that’s going live “by the end of September.” He says he doesn’t know if the PS5 Pro will be in the State of Play, but, as he puts it, “where else could it be?”

The PS5 Pro hasn’t been officially announced yet, but rumors and leaks about the upgraded machine have been circulating for some time. On top of that, rumors of some sort of PlayStation presentation have been gathering steam, practically since the last State of Play in May. Grubb is a well-connected and reliable source, so given that and all the smoke surrounding both of these things, we’re pretty confident he’s right on both counts.

But that’s just his word we’re going by. For what it’s worth, we haven’t heard anything ourselves on either subject, but they do fit together pretty well, so we’ll see how it all plays out.
