Raiders coach Antonio Pierce considers possible QB change, doesn’t regret critical comments after loss to Panthers

Asked specifically whether Minshew, who was signed this offseason and then won the job over starter O’Connell this summer, was still Las Vegas’ guy under center, Pierce wouldn’t make a commitment.

“I think we need to get together with the players first and evaluate everything that happened yesterday,” the Raiders coach said.

In his third game as a starter for the Raiders, Minshew completed 18 of 28 passes for 214 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 11 drives, five of which produced no first downs. The sixth-year quarterback was replaced by O’Connell with 4:47 left in the game and Vegas trailing 36-15. With the game nearly over, O’Connell led Vegas on a 3:51 touchdown drive, completing 9 of 12 passes for 82 yards and Tre Tucker’s TD.

This season, Minshew has completed 73 of 99 passes (a career-high 73.7% completion percentage) for 747 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He just led the Raiders to their first win of the season with a comeback win over Baltimore.

But after a disappointing loss to a previously abysmal Panthers team in which he said his players made “business decisions” — comments he didn’t back down from Monday — Pierce is apparently considering every option at every position, including the most important one in the game, to revive his 1-2 team.

“That’s football,” Pierce said Monday. “After a loss like that, things have to change.”
