MediaTek has officially unveiled a brand new chip and it’s set to invite a world of future-proof OLED TVs that will offer some truly amazing specs.
The chip that powers all the innovation is called Pentonic 800 and it will enable 165Hz VRR, improved AI processing, Wi-Fi 7 and much more.
MediaTek announced the new chip in a blog post highlighting its most advanced internals that include an upgraded GPU, CPU, AI, and coprocessors, all of which will bring some of the newest OLED models that appeal to upscaling advocates, among a plethora of other improvements.
Given its primary use case in Google TVs, there’s a good chance you’ll see this new SoC in Sony, TCL, and Hisense 2025 models.

The AI chip of the future
Although you may not have heard of them before, Pentonic SoCs can be found on some of the best OLED TVswith the Sony Bravia A95L (pictured above) equipped with MediaTek’s Pentonic 1000, while the TCL 2023 and 2024 TVs were equipped with the Pentonic 700. The chips are a must-have mainly on the best Google TVs largely thanks to quality software compatibility.
But the new Pentonic 800 is expected to be a major upgrade, leveraging up to 50% faster processing and a 60% reduction in memory bandwidth. The new SoC features a 1.8GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A73 processor, an Arm Mali-G557 MC1 GPU, and 3,200Mbps 64-bit DDR4 RAM.
MediaTek considers the Pentonic 800 to be the pinnacle of super resolution and picture quality enhancement, offering “near perfect restoration of content or detail and elimination of noise or artifacts from broadcast or streams Internet “. This will be made possible thanks to an adapted AI engine with significantly improved object and scene recognition parameters.
Beyond the AI improvements, the Pentonic 800 will bring 4K support up to 165Hz VRR. Currently, games are mostly relegated to 144Hz on most TVs, with some newer models like the TCL QM8 Mini-LED, capable of reaching 240 VRR at lower resolutions. The Pentonic 800 will let you play on TVs at 165Hz VRR in 4K resolution, but it will only be available when paired with one of the best gaming PCs because consoles cannot reach a frequency higher than 120 Hz.
If that wasn’t enough, TVs of the future using the Pentonic 800 will also support Wi-Fi 7, making them much more advanced compared to those currently using only Wi-Fi 6 vs. Wi-Fi 6e. Wi-Fi 7 aims to herald more robust wireless transfer potentials, ensuring that data like that from your streamed content arrives on the TV much faster and easier.
No manufacturer has yet announced that they will use the 800 chip, but given the widespread adoption of MediaTek’s previous chips, it’s almost a given that we’ll see them in one or more future sets from Sony, TCL, and Hisense. .
