NetherRealm Studios has now released the full gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1’s upcoming DLC character, Ermac and Kameo Fighter Mavado. You can check it out in the social media post below or via YouTube.

Original story (Tuesday April 9, 2024 at 05:45 BST):

NetherRealm’s new game Mortal Kombat 1 is still releasing new fighters for its Kombat Pass, and the next one on the way has now been officially announced.

It’s the return of the Ermac fighter, with a gameplay video to follow later this week. The current teaser features a brief exchange between Kung Lao and Ermac. This same teaser also reveals Mavado, the next Kameo fighter coming to Mortal Kombat 1.

Ed Boon also provided a detailed history of Ermac and how the character was created. Get the full recap below:

Ed Boon: Over 30 years ago, we worked on the very first #MortalKombat game. The game’s software had sections of code that it should (theoretically) never reach/execute. If so, it would increment a counter which would record the ERROR. We also created a “Game Audits” screen to check this counter in the arcades.

To keep each log short, I wrote an assembler MACRO that would call all the necessary functions in a single line of code. The macro was called ERMAC…short for Error Macro.

Unfortunately or fortunately, we listed the number of ERMACS that occurred directly after the log/number of times players fought against REPTILE, who was a hidden fighter in the first Mortal Kombat.

This (of course) led players to speculate that ERMAC was another hidden character, like REPTILE. Soon, rumors about ERMAC became legend, with players insisting they fought against him. They did not do it.

In Mortal Kombat 2, we made REPTILE a playable fighter and added 3 new hidden fighters: Smoke, Jade and Noob Saibot. But some players were still looking for Ermac.

For MK3, we decided to turn some myths into reality, starting with ANIMALITIES. Finally, in Ultimate MK3 (running out of colors), we finally added ERMAC as a real fighter (red ninja) in the roster.

Over the years he has made numerous appearances in MK games. Now he has a complete story and is part of MK lore.

We never (as always) imagined that this red ninja with the ridiculous name would end up playing such an important role in the history of Mortal Kombat and that he would still be around more than 30 years later! But here we are, as he’s about to join the #MortalKombat1 game trailer roster THIS WEEK!
