Macron is latest world leader to show support for Israel, but adds note of caution

French President Emmanuel Macron became the latest Western leader to visit Israel to show support and, like others, issued a warning about how the country is going about achieving its war goals, while urging it to do more to protect civilians in Gaza.

Macron said France would stand “alongside Israel,” suggesting after meeting with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu that an international coalition be formed to help counter Hamas, similar to the one that came together to fight the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. He also warned that any Israeli campaign in Gaza should focus on minimizing the scale of civilian casualties.
