Looks like COD 2024 is named Call of Duty Black Ops 6

This year’s COD, still pretty much still under wraps, will be titled Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, according to a newspaper announcement spotted by fans this morning.

Copies of USA Today were pictured with a promotional supplement for this year’s upcoming shooter, showing the game’s logo and title, as well as a range of in-universe news.

Fictional news articles detail the deterioration of Mount Rushmore, as seen on the Call of Duty Black Ops 6 teaser website last night.

“Iconic Presidents Blindfolded in Brazen Act,” reads the universe’s title. The story explains how an unknown group climbed the American monument at night to hang banners reading: “The Truth Lies.” The culprits would be either “anti-government extremists” or “anarchist pranksters”.

Other headlines detail the failure of the American dream (now “out of reach for the average citizen living in the United States”) and the upcoming U.S. election that would divide society.

“As the cycle accelerates, it becomes clear that the decisive votes will be cast in a few key battleground states, determining which political puppet will take responsibility for blocking the country’s legislative efforts for the next four years,” writes the newspaper. writing.

“As divisions deepen and trust in political leaders wanes, American families find themselves in an increasingly polarized landscape defined by uncertainty. As the cycle of empty platitudes continues, the fabric of American society is straining under the weight of disillusionment and division.”

Again, to be clear, this is all supposed to take place in-universe. I think.

An opinion article speaks of a “culture war” in which “rationality and logic” were “declared dead on the spot after succumbing to fatal injuries sustained in crossfire.” “Attempts were made to revive critical thinking and common sense through the administration of facts and appeals to shared humanity,” the article continues, “but the efforts proved futile in the face of the onslaught endless divisive narratives and deep-rooted prejudices.”

Certainly in-universe, yes.

While all of this may point to a more modern setting, it has previously been reported that Black Ops 6 will feature the Gulf War. Indeed, some expected the game’s title to follow Black Ops: Cold War and feature the conflict in its title.

The fact that it doesn’t keep its setting more vague, which may help broaden its appeal. It’s also worth noting that the title ditches the Roman numerals of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – officially, Black Ops IIII.

(And yes, Eurogamer’s Christian Donlan actually went to the British Museum to find out the truth about why IIII was used, as an alternative to the more standard Roman numerals for four – IV.)

Microsoft will fully reveal Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 at its June Showcase event and dedicate a full hour to detailing the game. We still have to see the gameplay, of course, and find out the release date. We’re also waiting to hear details about Black Ops 6 launching via Xbox Game Pass – apparently perhaps via a new, more expensive tier.
