Final Fantasy VII Rebirth offers 36 side quests scattered across the planet’s surface. If you want to go back to a previous chapter of the game and don’t understand the different side quest reset options, this guide is for you. Also, if you are confused by another menu option i.e. “Try Again” combat optionswe also break this down into easy to understand language.

Renaissanceside quest reset options in plain language

Once you wrap Renaissancethe main story, you will be able to access any chapter of the story using the “Chapter Selection” in the “System” options of the game. You have three options here. But they make more sense if we look at the options in reverse order of how they are listed. So, from bottom to top:

Reset all quest data

The most explicit of the three options. When selecting a previous chapter to move to, choosing this option, as indicated on the box, will reset all of your progress in each side quest.

Restore previously completed quest data

Let’s say you completed 24 out of 36 side quests, then completed the main story. If you select this option when moving to a previous chapter, you will keep this number – or the number of side quests you have completed. If you complete all 36 chapters, this option will keep all of these quests at completed status. Typically choose this option when you want to return to your most complete state.

Keep current quest end data

This option keeps all completed and unfinished side quests where they currently are when going through chapters. So let’s say you choose Reset All Quest Data, then complete five side quests before moving on to another chapter. If you would like to keep these five items in a completed state, leaving the rest unfinished, select “Keep…”

Which option is best to go back and clean up the remaining quests?

So if you’ve just reached the credits for the first time and are ready to come back to complete all the additional activities, you can simply select “Keep Current Quest Completion Data”. As the name suggests, this will “retain” your current progress.

If you ever reset all of your quest progress and want to return to the furthest point you previously went to, select “Restore…”

Why should you reset quest data?

Hey, maybe you really want chickens to follow you home? But seriously, some side quests have slightly different outcomes. For example, to get the best ending for “Dreaming of a Blue Sky” in Juno, you should choose Beef over the other options at the end of the quest.

Also, if you’ve completed the main story, then you know that a certain good boy party member is changing his voice a bit. Many side quests reflect this change. So if you play “Of Robed Men and Ransoms”, you will hear the first voice of this character. But if you get past the Cosmo Canyon chapter of the game and come back to do this quest, this character will have a different voice. I replayed a few of these quests on either side of the voice swap and found that the lines of dialogue landed a little differently in both cases. It’s an interesting observation if you’re obsessed with Renaissance as much as me.
