I stopped playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 because it was too weird for me, and I say that as a Bethesda RPG player. If you’re still in the Capcom camp-em-up, you might be interested in this mod, which enables a path tracing setting normally hidden from players.
The effect is surprising because it not only makes shadows and highlights look a little prettier, but it also does so. Those flickering shadows you get whenever a light source moves (like, you know, the sun) are made stable and solid, which is a definite improvement. But it also enhances characters’ skin, hair, and eyes, as well as materials like metal and glass. Iron armor suddenly appears shiny rather than dull, and glass bottles appear reflective rather than flat.
Of course, there is a downside. It’s clear that this setting is not intended for the public as there is no noise filter on it, and in motion things sometimes appear to be seen under a thin burlap sack, or as if you were at that stage of an LSD trip where everything is moving and the whole world is alive. It’s a little off-putting, is what I’m saying. Sometimes indoor areas will be pitch black and a handful of objects that normally have shadows will lose them.
As Digital Foundry suggests in an excellent video on the mod, this is likely a setting that existed for reference rather than something that was intended to be playable. The performance alone, in a game with already poor performance, will likely deter you from playing the entire game with path tracing enabled. However, as something you can enable for your character’s presentation in photo mode, it’s pretty cool.
You can download Graphics Suite Alpha from Nexus Mods and you will need to install RE Framework first. I also consider the mod that allows you to prevent pawns from repeating dialogue over and over to be essential.
