Zendaya’s latest film is officially in theaters and tennis-core fashion is front and center. In “Challengers,” directed by Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya plays Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach. In this steamy sports romance, Tashi trains her husband, Art Donaldson (played by Mike Faist), and to overcome a losing streak, he must face his ex-best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend, Patrick Zweig (Josh O ‘Connor). .
Throughout the film, which moves from high school to college and adult life in the late 2000s, Zendaya can be seen in majority sportswear. While most of the looks took on a normative vibe with the obvious tennis outfits worn by the characters, the costume department of “Challengers” was headed by one of fashion’s most beloved designers, Jonathan Anderson.
Loewe’s creative director said on Instagram: “My initial starting point when it comes to clothing is ultimately to build a character; you kind of have to get into that mindset of this living person… With Tashi, we became obsessed with this idea of success. In the film, when Zendaya’s character is at her peak, she can be seen in a pair of Chanel sneakers on several occasions, in addition to designer looks including a pristine Stella McCartney long-sleeved shirt dress while she is sitting at the edge of the field.
However, when Tashi is in college, she dresses almost exclusively in Adidas because she is sponsored by the brand and on the verge of becoming the next big tennis star. In one scene, Zendaya can be seen in a fitted tennis dress paired with white Adidas pumps. She also wears a pair of shell-toe Adidas Superstars with one of the most memorable pieces from the film: the “I Told Ya” t-shirt.
The gray t-shirt is also seen on Patrick throughout the film and is based on a design worn by John F. Kennedy Jr. in the 1990s. Anderson said Patrick was specifically inspired by JFK Jr. The character could also being seen wearing Nike and Jordan sneakers.
As for artistry, Anderson said her ensembles are all about perfection and the “total look.” He wore almost exclusively crisp white, perfectly fitted Uniqlo tennis outfits. And for the film’s final tennis scene, he wears On sneakers.
