CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wisconsin — A tractor accident at a Chippewa County apple orchard sent 25 people to the hospital Wednesday morning.

Two hay wagons carrying adults and children collided, according to Chippewa Fire District Deputy Chief Cory Jeffers. Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes said one wagon lost control while going down a hill.

Authorities put emergency protocols in place and 25 people were transported to various hospitals. Marshfield Medical Center in Eau Claire said it saw seven patients from the incident who were being treated for minor to serious injuries. Hakes said three of the people involved suffered “life-threatening injuries.”

A helicopter was called in as reinforcements.

“Everybody was on high alert, everybody was professional and did a great job treating patients and getting the job done,” Jeffers said.

The children have been reunited with their parents, Jeffers added.

St. Mark Lutheran School in Eau Claire Principal Peter Micheels said they are working with the county sheriff’s department and are “focusing on reuniting the children with their guardians.”

“Whenever we face a difficult time, we entrust everything to the Lord’s care and trust in His guiding hand,” Micheels said.
