Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of Champions League clash with Liverpool, while Jurgen Klopp says he almost turned off the TV watching the 2005 final with AC Milan

Liverpool won’t have to worry about Zlatan Ibrahimovic for their Champions League opener against AC Milan.

The 39-year-old returned to action last weekend after a four-month absence with a knee injury, however, he did not make it to Merseyside due to an Achilles problem.

“Zlatan wanted to join the game (against Lazio) and of course after the game he got an inflammation,” said Milan coach Stefano Pioli.

“We were hoping he could play but he was still in pain so we don’t want to risk tomorrow because it’s a very important game and we have so many games.

“We are very sorry for Zlatan because he still wants to play, but he will be back soon.”

Wednesday night’s clash will bring back memories of the classic Champions League final for both clubs in 2005 when Liverpool came back incredibly 3-0 to beat a star-studded Milan side on penalties.

Milan were leading 3-0 at half-time in Istanbul and Liverpool boss Klopp, who was in his first managerial role in Mainz at the time, admitted he almost interrupted the game before the incredible return of the Reds.

“At that time I was neither an AC Milan nor Liverpool fan watching the Champions League final and after 3-0, with everything that has been said before about Milan being the favorite, it looked like the game was over, ”said Klopp.

“I thought I wasn’t watching the second half because everyone except the few people in the Liverpool dressing room thought this game could be decided.

“And then it became one of the greatest football sensations of all time and I was really happy that I didn’t turn off the TV and watched the whole game.”
