Young Sheldon’s Jim Parsons finale cameo changes the meaning of the entire series

An appearance in the final of The Big Bang Theory spin off Young Sheldon may have just changed the way fans interpret the entire series.

Jim Parsons, who played title character Sheldon Cooper on the hit sitcom, made an appearance in the series finale on Thursday (May 16). Young Sheldonnext to The Big Bang Theory co-star Mayim Bialik.

Young Sheldon follows a younger version of Parsons’ character, played in the series by child star Iain Armitage.

Parsons is the narrator of the series, without appearing on screen. However, in the series finale, it is revealed that the events of Young Sheldon are actually the contents of a memoir written by Sheldon.

Viewers were quick to notice that the reveal retroactively colors much of what the series has previously shown – and potentially provides an explanation for several The Big Bang Theory-related plot holes that fans had spotted.

“The fact that the entirety of @YoungSheldon is from Sheldon’s memoir is a clever way to establish his ‘unreliable narrator,’ which is enough to explain the contradictions in the @bigbangtheory episodes,” one fan wrote.

Another commented: “Also, with Sheldon telling his story now that he has kids, it makes sense that #YoungSheldon would differ from his stories in #TBBT.” He sees everything in a new context. Maybe he still doesn’t agree with all their choices, but he understands them.

In the second half of the final episode, the audience finds Sheldon as an adult, with his wife Amy (Bialik). It is revealed that the couple now have two children, who have seemingly moved away from their parents’ STEM backgrounds, pursuing interests in hockey and acting.

Talk to People, co-showrunner Steve Holland described the efforts to get Parsons and Bialik to reprise their famous roles. “I think they were both excited,” he said. “Jim was obviously part of the show. He is executive producer. He was the narrator. I think Mayim literally said, “Whatever you want me to do, I will come and do it.” »

“They are both so talented,” he added. “I think they would say they were nervous about getting back into these characters and weren’t sure they would find their rhythm. Watching them do it, it was so simple.

“Just watching them work and sit and edit and watch the takes, they make so many smart and interesting choices on every line,” he said. “It was truly a joy to watch.”

Young Sheldon aired for seven seasons from 2017 to 2024.
