HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – A defendant was asked why he did not keep his catwalk clear, but his situation did not elicit any sympathy from the judge.

The accused told the judge he had cancer and was too weak to go out and remove overgrown plants. The man tries to breathe when he tries to speak during the hearing.

The exchange between 31st District Judge Alexis G. Krot and a 72-year-old man with cancer faces criticism on social media.

“You should be ashamed of yourself,” Krot said. “Have you seen this photo? It is shameful.

Shibbir Chowdhury’s father was in court for failing to maintain his property in violation of a city ordinance. Chowdhury was at court helping his father, who didn’t speak much English.

“If I could give you jail time for that, I would,” Krot said.

Chowdhury said his father was diagnosed with lymph node cancer in 2019. He said the treatments affect his father’s mobility. He said since the diagnoses, he and his mother have been trying to maintain the property.

“I usually take care of the backyard business and everything, but this time I was out of the country,” Chowdhury said.

Chowdhury said they violated the city ordinance.

“There were really some mistakes that I should have corrected. But, yeah, still, like she should have told my dad more politely, ”Chowdhury said.

A recording of the courtroom exchange has been viewed over 6,000 times.

Violation of the order is punishable by a fine of $ 100. The family said they cleaned up the property and will pay the fine.
