WSL: Chelsea stay in control of title race despite Arsenal hitting seven against Aston Villa


Helsea kept control of the Women’s Super League title race by claiming a 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Sunday night.

Pernille Harder concealed a late penalty to claim three hard-fought points for Emma Hayes’ side, who are four points clear of rivals Arsenal, who are just one game less.

Earlier on Sunday, Arsenal cruised to a 7-0 win over Aston Villa to ratchet up the pressure.

Vivianne Miedema scored twice with powerful shots in the first 13 minutes to send Arsenal 2-0 down at the break, and a Rachel Corsie own goal seven minutes into the second half saw Villa crumble .

Beth Mead, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Stina Blackstenius all got on the scoresheet before Parris kicked home a 90th-minute penalty to reach half a century of league goals in the English top flight as the Gunners climbed to 49 points, one behind Chelsea.

Arsenal take on Tottenham Hotspur, who play Everton later on Sunday, in midweek before ending their league campaign at West Ham, while Chelsea meet Birmingham before taking on Manchester United in their final game.

Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 win over West Ham United to move up to third place above Manchester City, who beat Brighton & Hove Albion 7-2 on Saturday.

Bottom of the table, Leicester earned a 0-0 draw with Reading for what could prove to be a vital point in the relegation battle. The Foxes have 13 points after 21 games, five ahead of Birmingham, who have two games in hand.
