The 2022 FIFA World Cup comes to a close on Sunday, when France and Argentina play out what is expected to be one for the ages (9 a.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app).
Ahead of the game, we asked FOX Sports football analysts Sacha Kljestan, Laken Litman and Martin Rogers to predict what they think might happen. Here’s what they had to say:
1. Did your pick to win the tournament make it to the final? If not, who was it?
Kjestan: No, I chose Brazil. I thought it was the strongest team coming but they wasted their chance against Croatia.
Litman: Yes! I feel very smart to have chosen Argentina to win everything. And I hope I’ll feel even smarter after they win and Lionel Messi gets his World Cup trophy.
Roger: Not even close. I chose Spain.
2. Who do you think will win between Argentina and France and why?
Kjestan: I have France winning 3-2 in a very entertaining and competitive game.
Litman: Argentina – I’m a sucker for fairy tales. Although they don’t often go the way I want, I feel like Messi and Argentina are destined to win.
Roger: Argentina. Don’t expect to see Messi fight his way through this one – he’ll be a handful. Moreover, a big part of the reason France beat them in 2018 was the job N’Golo Kante did to manage Messi. He’s not here this time.
3. Outside Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, who are you most looking forward to seeing in the final and why?
Kjestan: Antoine Griezmann. He’s been France’s unsung hero this time around. In the last World Cup he scored goals, this time he does everything else. Defending and playing. He was amazing.
litman: Julián Álvarez for Argentina. I’ve been so impressed with him throughout this tournament and love how Messi seems to have taken him under his wing. The superstar was disinterested when he saw Álvarez had the best chance and gave it to him for an assist.
Roger: Griezmann and Alvarez. At different stages of their careers, but both brilliant to watch.
4. Would a World Cup title boost Lionel Messi’s status as a GOAT? Why or why not?
Kjestan: No, he is already the GOAT and does not need this World Cup title to certify it. Although if he won it, it would be undisputed.
Litman: Yes. It’s the one major thing that’s eluded him his entire career. This is for immortality!
Roger: Not solidifying him, but certainly putting him firmly in the conversation with Pelé and Diego Maradona, while clearing him of Ronaldo as the best of this generation.
5. If the tournament ended today, who would you choose for the Ballon d’Or and why?
Kjestan: Right now, Messi is the Ballon d’Or winner, but Mbappé is right there. Whoever has a better final should win the tournament’s best player trophy.
Litman: Messi. He’s been the X factor since Argentina’s shock defeat to Saudi Arabia and led his team to the final.
Roger: Slight advantage of Mbappé over Messi, but it’s close.
