HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Aerospace company Boeing on Tuesday became the latest federal contractor to announce it will require its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The company has given employees until Dec. 8 to prove that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a genuine medical or religious exemption.
Boeing employs nearly 3,000 people in Alabama.
The deadline is in line with President Joe Biden’s executive order requiring companies doing business with the federal government to require their employees to be vaccinated. The federal government has already required all of its employees to be vaccinated.
Claire Aiello of the Huntsville / Madison County Chamber says it’s important for employers and employees to fully understand the scope of these requirements well in advance of the Dec. 8 deadline.
“[Employers] somehow need to communicate certain deadlines to their employees right now, ”Aiello said. “You know, ‘get the vaccine before that date’ or ‘get your first dose before that dose and your second dose on that date.’ It is to be fully vaccinated by December 8.
Boeing issued the following statement to News 19:
“To ensure compliance with President Biden’s Executive Order for Federal Contractors, Boeing requires its U.S.-based employees to show proof of vaccination or have approved reasonable accommodation (based on disability or sincere religious belief) by December 8. Boeing will continue to carefully monitor guidelines from public health agencies and federal, state and local government requirements to inform our COVID-19 policies. We continue to prioritize the health and safety of all of our employees. “
Paul Lewis, Boeing spokesperson
In a statement Tuesday, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said he is currently examining legal options to challenge President Biden’s executive order requiring federal contractors to be vaccinated.
For employers who want to make the vaccination process easier for their employees, Huntsville Hospital offers a mobile vaccination team who will come to your office and offer vaccines to employees. The mobile vaccination team requires the employee to have at least 25 people lined up for the vaccine. This number can come from employees, spouses and children aged 12 and over. Employers interested in registering their establishment for the mobile clinic can send an email firstname.lastname@example.org.
