Every day, the Word the answer changes, giving players six chances to guess the correct answer. As players make their attempts, the tiles change color to provide feedback: green for correctly placed letters, yellow for letters that are part of the word but in the wrong position, and gray for letters that are not in the word at all. Joel C. Wallenberg, a lecturer in language change at the University of York in the United Kingdom, told News week Why Word has maintained its appeal.
“Language always seems to fascinate people. Perhaps this is because producing and understanding language is an incredibly complex process, and we are aware of only a tiny part of this process as it takes place; Most of what we do when we speak, we do unconsciously,” he explained. “But people may feel like they’re doing something very involved and impressive when they speak, even if they don’t know the details or why it should be that way.
“Language games show how conscious (or unconscious) we are of our own linguistic processes and perhaps give us a little more information about them than before. Perhaps this is one reasons why humans, perhaps universally, have always invented and enjoyed language games!” Wallenberg added.
