Woman transported dies after ambulance she was in was hit by driver who turned on red light, authorities say

HOUSTON – A woman has died and four others are injured after an accident involving an ambulance in northwest Harris County.

The crash happened around 11:13 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Cypresswood Drive and TC Jester, authorities said.

Harris County MPs said an 80-year-old woman identified as Shirley Ogletree was being transported by private ambulance for a non-emergency when another driver heading south turned on a red light at the intersection .

MPs said the driver, later identified as Geovanny Castro, hit the ambulance and caused it to turn around and land on its wheels. Castro’s 2013 Toyota Carolla ended up in a nearby wooded area, MPs said.

Officials said Ogletree, rear attendant Christopher Lindseth and ambulance driver Kimberly Carter had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. Ogletree was later pronounced dead. Lindseth and Carter’s terms are unclear.

The passenger of the crashed vehicle, Victor Eligio, was also transported by ambulance in unknown conditions, MEPs said. Castro had to be evacuated and was taken to hospital via Life Flight in critical condition.

Investigators are still working to learn more about the crash and determine if Castro may have been intoxicated.

The Acadian Ambulance Service released a statement on Saturday following the ambulance accident:
