PICO RIVERA, Calif. (KTLA) — A California woman stabbed two pit bulls, killing one, as they attacked her one-year-old daughter in their home Sunday night.
The attack happened when one of the dogs that lived at Pico Rivera’s house ran into the kitchen around 10:30 p.m.
The 3-year-old dog jumped on the toddler and attacked her, said the child’s grandmother, Margaret Morales.
The second pit bull ran seconds later and attacked the girl as her mother and grandmother struggled to free her.
“He had it by the leg, and I had to pull his teeth out,” Margaret Morales said. “He bit my hand and my hand is quite severely cut open.”
Unable to free his daughter, Jamie Morales took a knife and began stabbing the dogs.
“I had to stab the dog…I had to,” Jamie Morales said. “It was either him or my daughter, and I chose my daughter.”
One of the dogs died after being stabbed, said Jaime Morales, whose face was also mutilated in the incident.
The girl, identified by her family as Ruby Cervantes, was taken to USC Los Angeles County Medical Center with multiple bite wounds to her face and body. She was undergoing surgery and is expected to survive.
The girl’s aunt was also injured in the incident.
The family says the dogs were never aggressive before Sunday’s incident. The second dog involved in the attack will be put down, officials say.
