LONDON — The Duchess of Edinburgh expressed her condolences on Wednesday after the death of an 81-year-old woman who was struck by a motorbike which was part of the British Royal Police escort.

Sophie, the wife of Prince Edward, expressed her sympathy for the death of Helen Holland, who was struck at a west London intersection on May 10.

“The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Helen Holland,” Buckingham Palace said. “His Royal Highness’s deepest condolences and sympathies go out to all of Mrs. Holland’s family.”

Holland’s son Martin told the BBC his mother died after suffering “multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries”. Holland, who is from Essex, is said to have visited his older sister in London.

Her son said she had been fighting “for her life for almost two weeks…but irreversible damage to her brain finally ended today’s battle”.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the crash.
