Police say a 61-year-old Florida woman stabbed her physically disabled husband more than 140 times and struck him in the head with a meat cleaver to ensure he was dead
PALM SPRINGS, Fla. – A 61-year-old Florida woman is charged with stabbing her physically handicapped husband more than 140 times and hitting him in the head with a meat cleaver to ensure he was dead .
Joan Burke was arrested Sunday and charged with first-degree murder, according to Palm Springs police. No reason has been announced.
Melvin Weller’s stepson found his body in a pool of blood on the couple’s kitchen floor on February 11. A bloody knife and a meat cleaver were in the sink and blood splattered throughout the room, according to a police report.
Burke was found in a bedroom with cuts to both palms, media reported.
“It is very common for the offender to have lacerations to the palm of one or both hands when stabbing another person,” the police report said.
The medical examiner’s report indicates that Weller had stab wounds all over his body.
An attorney for Burke was not on file for his booking at the Palm Beach County Jail.
“He was always quite friendly if he was passing by, and if my dad and I were outside, he would just wave at us,” Isabella Jaramillo told WPTV. “It’s crazy to think that someone could do this to someone else.”
