Wimbledon 2022: Heather Watson eliminated by young star Jule Niemeier

Britain’s number four Watson enjoyed a memorable run to the last 16, her best performance at a Grand Slam.

But a quarter-final place proved beyond the 30-year-old from Guernsey as young German Niemeier won 6-2 6-4.

Previously, the crowd was treated to a parade of former champions including Rod Laver, Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg, Andy Murray and Roger Federer to celebrate Center Court’s centenary.

Unfortunately, they then got to witness what has been a familiar sight for the past 100 years of a British player being eliminated.

Niemeier, 22, may not be seeded, but she beat second seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round and illustrated her quality with a stunning winner from the baseline as she chased a Watson’s lob.

It was a flat first set from Watson, who was broken twice and crushed the net in frustration after missing a single volley to bring the set point home.

Home hopes were briefly lifted when Watson confidently broke for a 2-0 lead in the second, but was unable to back it up and double faulted when Niemeier hit back directly.

Two more double faults in his next service game spelled the death knell for Watson as Niemeier cruised to victory in an hour and 17 minutes.
