Willian’s agent Kia Joorabchian told talkSPORT the winger “did the right thing” by agreeing to cancel his contract at Arsenal.
The 33-year-old agreed to end his stay with the Gunners after a scorching first season, with two years left on his contract.
Last summer, the Brazilian left Chelsea for north London and signed a three-year contract worth £ 220,000 a week.
The Blues had offered him a two-year contract, but wanted to join Arsenal after being convinced by Mikel Arteta.
However, a year later, Willian agreed to break his contract and return to Brazil to play for the Corinthians childhood club.
It is claimed the move saved the Gunners around £ 20million and, speaking to talkSPORT’s Jim White and Simon Jordan on deadline day, Joorabchian confirmed:
“Yes, it’s true, it’s mostly true. I won’t reveal the exact numbers, but the reports are pretty accurate.
“He ended his contract and he did it voluntarily, he’s probably one of the first players to do it.
“Previously the players, especially at Arsenal, had exhausted their contracts, but he was not one of them.”
When asked about the reasons for Willian’s departure, Joorabchian insisted the decision was mutual.
“When he joined, he sincerely joined because he was at the center of Arteta’s thinking,” the agent continued.
“Arteta made several presentations to Willian and made it clear that he will be the focal point of how he builds the team around him.
“Willian had an offer from Chelsea to extend for two years, but he wanted three years and he took the plunge. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for him.
“He has been criticized very heavily for why he moved here, but none of the things that have been suggested have been.”
Willian is the latest player to struggle to make an impact after joining the Gunners, but hasn’t blamed Arteta.
Joorabchian said: “I spoke to Arsenal. I had a meeting with Arteta and Edu, they explained to me that it had not gone well and I spoke to Willian.
“I don’t think it benefits anything to just let someone sit there for the sake of sitting there. When things go wrong, both parties have to consider that it has gone wrong and you have to find a solution.
“I think Willian did the right thing, he went for the project and the project wasn’t there.
“Unfortunately I have to say, which player has moved to Arsenal that hasn’t been a disaster in the past two years? This one I’m talking like a fan
“I don’t think it’s Willian. I think something is wrong [at Arsenal] and that’s just one piece of the puzzle.
“Nobody blames Arteta, we all want Arteta to be successful. Even as fans they may be unhappy right now, but they want the best for club soccer. Willian wants all success for Arteta and this team. ‘Arsenal.
“Corintihans is a perfect match, they have 40 million fans, he started his career at the club …”
