Willian leaves Corinthians due to ‘death threats’ as former Chelsea and Arsenal winger’s potential move to Fulham and Premier League return draws closer

Willian revealed that ‘constant threats against his family’ were behind his decision to leave Corinthians.

The 34-year-old, who spent eight years in the Premier League with Chelsea and Arsenal, has taken the decision to terminate his contract with the Brazilian club by mutual consent, meaning he is now a free agent.

Fulham are in negotiations with the player’s agent over a potential transfer to the newly promoted Premier League club, a move which could be attractive due to his family residing in London.

Since joining Corinthians, Willian has scored just once in 45 appearances for the club, with the Brazilian giants also having been knocked out of two competitions in recent weeks.

With a new chapter ahead of him, the winger explained his decision to leave the club on Instagram, saying it was in his interest and that of the club.

Speaking to social media, Willian said: “As I say goodbye to Corinthians today, I want to thank the club for the opportunity to wear this shirt again and the fans who have been so supportive of me.

“Unfortunately, due to the constant threats that my family and I have faced, I have made the decision to terminate the contract, understanding that it would be better for me and for the club.

“I wish the club the best and God bless everyone.”

Speaking about his exit, the club said: “Corinthians have accepted the dismissal of the athlete, the anticipation of the end of the contract.

“Willian alleged private and family problems and a desire to leave Brazil. Corinthians are sorry, but respect the player’s decision.

Opening up further on the abuse he received from Corinthians fans in his homeland, the Brazilian told Globe Esporte: “I didn’t come back to be threatened.

“When Corinthians lost a game or I didn’t play well, my family received death threats and rants on social media.

“At first they targeted my wife and daughters, after a while my father and sister were also bombarded with messages.”
