William Buick and Andrew Balding win Goodwood Awards | Race News

The 2021 Qatar Goodwood Festival will surely be remembered by William Buick for many years to come.

Not only was he crowned Sussex’s best jockey of the week with seven winners, he’s set to tie the knot on Sunday.

Buick grabbed feature film awards over Suesa in the King George Qatar Stakes and Qatar Lillie Langtry on Wonderful Tonight – with the Best Driver award sewn in the middle of the final afternoon.

“I am delighted to be the first Glorious Goodwood jockey,” said Buick.

“Obviously it’s been over five days and you can’t win them all. It’s intense and there are some that you look back on and wish it were different.

“It’s been a good week, we all know it’s a tough week. I knew I had some good races coming up in the week, and it’s always a week you look back on and think about. ‘there are a couple of races you would like to do again, but overall it has been a great week.

“I’m really happy with Suesa and Wonderful Tonight being the highlights.”

He added: “Now I have to focus on my speech – all week I have been focusing on my job, now I will focus on tomorrow! It should be a big day. James Doyle is my witness.

“I’m a little nervous now, but it should be a bright day and we are getting married in a church across from our house.”

Andrew Balding, who won the Sussex Stakes with Alcohol Free, was crowned top coach with five winners.

After being briefed on the fact, the Kingsclere manager said: “It’s great. I thought we had a chance to make it today and we had a few winners.

“We have targeted this meeting with the right horses. The terrain was fine for most of them, it’s been a good week.

“It was a special time for us with Alcohol Free (in the Sussex Stakes). She’s a special filly and we really enjoyed her.”
