Will Smith reportedly refused to leave Oscars 2022 after slap

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says it asked Will Smith to leave the Oscars on Sunday after he slapped Chris Rock, but the actor refused.

“Things unfolded in a way that we could not have foreseen,” the Academy told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “Although we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently.”

Earlier in the week, the Academy condemned Smith’s actions and launched a formal review of the incident.

“We have officially initiated a formal review around the incident and will explore further actions and consequences consistent with our statutes, standards of conduct and California law,” the statement read.

On Monday, Smith – who hit out at Rock for playing a bald joke on his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith – apologized for his “unacceptable” and “embarrassing” actions.

“My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about my Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of place and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no room for violence in a world of love and kindness.
