LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, colloquially known as the Academy, on Friday banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars or any other Academy event for 10 years after his slap in the face of Chris Rock at the Oscars.
The move comes after a meeting of the Academy’s Board of Governors to discuss a response to Smith’s actions.
The Academy, in a statement, called Smith’s actions “unacceptable and harmful.”
Smith preemptively resigned from the Academy last week in preparation for the reunion and said he would accept any punishment handed down by the Academy.
An email sent to Smith’s representatives seeking comment was not immediately returned.
