Wild sex allegations revealed in ‘softest’ prison as 18 female guards fired and quit: report

At least 18 female guards at Britain’s ‘coziest prison’ have reportedly been fired or resigned amid a spate of sordid sex accusations – including allegations of in-cell sex and a female guard doing passing his underwear to an inmate.

HMP Berwyn, which is also Britain’s largest facility, has been subject to various allegations of illicit business and inappropriate relations between guards and inmates since it opened in 2017, with three former workers convicted in a 2019 scandal, the Mirror reported.

The publication obtained exit documents obtained through information requests showed that inappropriate relationships were more prevalent than they publicly knew.

UK media reports that the 18 women who have been sacked or resigned from a single prison is a ‘record’, noting that since 2019 a total of 31 women across England and Wales have been sacked from prison for intimate relations with inmates.

Former HMP Berwyn caretaker Jennifer Gavan, for example, was sentenced to eight months in prison last year after pleading guilty to misconduct. She accepted £150 – roughly $180 – from inmate Alex Coxon to smuggle a mobile phone to her, which they then used to exchange steamy photos, according to the Mirror. Coxon was in jail for robbery.

Mark Fairhurst, president of the Prison Officers’ Association, blamed the recent spate of cases and layoffs on “the wrong kind of women” being hired.

“Recruited staff don’t have face-to-face interviews…everything is done on Zoom,” Fairhurst told the Mirror. “A lot of people who get these jobs don’t have enough life experience and are likely to be conditioned by prisoners.”

Another former warden, Emily Watson, was jailed for a year after having an affair with inmate John McGee, who was jailed for eight years for ‘causing death by dangerous driving’, according to the Mirror . McGee has also been described as a drug dealer.

She was imprisoned for performing a sexual act on the inmate in his cell.

Another former guard, Ayshea Gunn, was jailed for a year in 2019 after having sex with inmate Khuram Razaq, who was serving a 12-year sentence for conspiracy to steal, according to Yahoo! News.

In court proceedings, Gunn was accused of smuggling a pair of her underwear to Razaq, and investigators found photos of Gunn and Razaq kissing among the former guard’s belongings.

Current prison staff have undergone new corruption prevention training in a bid to curb business, according to reports earlier this year.

“The overwhelming majority of Corrections staff are hardworking and dedicated and we will not hesitate to punish those who break the rules,” a Corrections spokesperson told Yahoo! News in January.
