Wife Helps Amputee Husband Improve His Prosthetic Skills With Weekly Dance


Internet commentators were elated after a couple showed off their dancing skills in a heartwarming video.

In a viral Reddit post posted to r/MadeMeSmile, Redditor u/benhundben (otherwise known as the original poster, or OP) shared a video of himself and his wife practicing a choreographed dance to Bruno Mars’ “Runaway Baby.” .

The original poster, a double below the knee amputee who documents his progress using prosthetics on Instagram as @ampisallen and TikTok as @ampisallenfamily, explained that the couple learn a new dance every week to improve in several areas.

Titled, “Every week my wife challenges me to learn a dance to improve my prosthetics and dance skills. This week has been tough!” the viral post received more than 53,000 votes in the past 10 hours.

In the United States, the Amputee Coalition of America estimates that there are 185,000 new lower extremity amputations each year, with below-knee amputations being the most common. The Amputee Coalition of America also reports that there are 2 million amputees currently living in the United States, but that number will increase to 3.6 million by 2050.

While 54% of amputations are caused by vascular disease and 45% by traumatic injury, Advanced Amputee Solutions reports that less than 2% of amputations are caused by cancer.

Editors were thrilled by a man who, with the help of his wife, is using dance to recover from a double below-knee amputation.

However, in response to her own viral video, the original poster explained that her amputations were caused by a rare disease.

“I have a rare and aggressive tumor disease that has affected my hands and feet,” he wrote in a comment that received nearly 2,000 votes.

“I’ve battled this for almost half my life with several different treatments,” he continued. “[Approximately] two years ago I had my feet amputated to get rid of the ‘problem’ there.”

Further explaining that the past few months have been tough, the original poster said learning dances, especially the dance featured in the viral video, has been helpful for him and his family.

“It feels good to gradually resume improving my mobility!” he wrote.

Throughout the comments section of the viral post, Redditors applauded the original poster and his wife for performing a hard and fast dance routine, as well as their unique recovery method.

“What an awesome way to recover,” Redditor u/KrayzieBoneTL85 wrote in the main comment to the post, which received over 1,000 votes.

“Well done bro,” they added.

Redditor u/acrylicmole, whose comment received nearly 700 votes, echoed that sentiment.

“The celebration at the end is so cute,” they wrote. “You guys keep rocking it.”

“Good work!” And accessories for [your] wife for cheering you on,” added Redditor u/Sage314.

In a separate comment, Redditor u/SoSoDave said they were overwhelmed with emotion watching the original poster and his wife dance and then celebrate.

“I smile with tears in my eyes,” they wrote. “I am a dancer and I pray for the strength you have.”
