Bangladesh vs West Indies 1st T20 LIVE: The visitors are expected to be much more competitive in both the T20I and the three-game One-Day International series.
Although question marks over the availability of key players can have a destabilizing effect on a team.
Shakib to MISS ODI? Reports from Dhaka suggest Test captain Shakib al Hasan will miss the ODI leg of the campaign.
This is apparently because these matches are not part of the ODI Super League.
“I expect us to be much more competitive in the white ball formats,” said Shakib the day after his side’s ten-wicket defeat in the second Test at St. Lucia on Monday gave West Indies a 2-0 series sweep.
“The One-Day format is something we always do well in and we’re not far behind the T20 format either, so I think we’ll put on a show and be very competitive against West Indies.”
Recent history confirms this confidence as Bangladesh won the ODI and T20I series when they last visited the region in 2018.
At last year’s World T20, West Indies managed to hold on to a three-point win over the Bangladeshis, the then-title holders’ only win in the main group stage of a hugely disappointing campaign.
Bangladesh have brought in fast bowler Taskin Ahmed and off-spinner Mehidy Hasan for the Twenty20 series.
Taskin picked up eight wickets in three matches against South Africa in April until he aggravated an old shoulder injury.
Mehidy hasn’t played a T20 international since December 2018 but has been a regular in Tests and ODIs for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh have been hit hard with injuries in the West Indies, missing pacemaker Shohidul Islam, drummer Yasir Ali and all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin.
NEWS FROM CAMP Antilles: While buoyant following test successes, West Indies also have player availability issues.
Regular fly-half Evin Lewis is not undergoing a fitness test as requested by coaches. Mid-order batsman Shimron Hetmyer is nursing an injury while all-rounder Fabian Allen has been granted time off after being initially selected to the white ball teams.
Nevertheless, Desmond Haynes, the excellent former opening batsman and now chairman of the selectors, expects the T20I and ODI teams to pick up where the Test team left off.
“I’m not going to sit here and talk about how we turned the corner or anything like that,” he said.
“But I just want to acknowledge the success we’ve had so far and also the players who have done a good job for us.”
The versatile Kyle Mayers, “The Man of the Series” through both Tests and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, the series’ leading wicket-taker with 12 kills, are included in the T20 team which will be led by Nicholas Pooran with Rovman Powell as vice-captain.
Windsor Park will see its first senior men’s international action since the series last Test against Pakistan in May 2017.
The island was devastated by the passage of Hurricane Maria in September of that year, necessitating extensive restoration work on Dominica’s main sporting venue.
