Why is Luka Doncic fined $35,000 by the NBA? All you need to know

Recent reports have emerged that the NBA fined Luka Doncic $35,000 for a gesture towards a referee. The incident happened in the closing seconds of the Dallas Mavericks’ recent game with the Golden State Warriors.

In a tight game down the home stretch, there was a no-call that Luka Doncic wasn’t happy about. He then gestured money to the referees. After the no-call, the Golden State Warriors won the game by a final score of 127-125.

Part of the reason Luka was so frustrated is because of the importance of the game. Just a few games into the regular season, the Warriors and Dallas Mavericks are neck and neck in the Western Conference standings.

While Luka Doncic may have been fined, he’s not the only Mavericks person to piss off the referees in the game. Owner Mark Cuban rang on social media for a call that arguably cost them the game.

During the third quarter, a play occurred where it looked like the Mavericks were lining up on the wrong side of the field. The Golden State Warriors made the ball entry and a wide-open layup.

After the match, Cuban went on a lengthy rant discussing this play. He said the umpires told them the wrong thing and it was “the worst unappealable officiating mistake in NBA history.”

Along with the rant, Cuban also said the Mavericks would protest this game. Since the Warriors only won by two runs, this potential foul by the officials cost Dallas the game.

After each game, the NBA releases a two-minute late-game call report. When he came out for Mavericks vs Warriors, only one bad call was reported. However, it wasn’t the non-appeal that earned Luka a fine.

According to the two-minute report, the only thing the referees missed was a trip from Luka with around 40 seconds left in the game. This means that after further consideration, the officials made the right decision not to appeal in the final seconds.

A final decision hasn’t been made on the Mavericks’ call-up, but it will be interesting to see what this excruciating loss does to their playoff position.
