Why is Jack Grealish absent from Man City’s Champions League game at Sporting Lisbon? What did Pep Guardiola say about the £100million star’s absence?

Manchester City are preparing for a huge Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon without one of their key players.

Jack Grealish has endured a frustrating time since joining the Etihad for £100m last summer.

While starting 20 appearances in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, the 26-year-old has found his opportunities at first-team level somewhat limited in recent months, with the player a regular victim of the system of head coach rotation.

After scoring seven goals and 12 assists for Aston Villa last season, the hope was that he would be able to kick things off and add to those numbers this year.

However, with just three goals and three assists in all competitions so far, it means City’s summer signing has some work to do to establish himself at the Etihad.

Unfortunately for Grealish, a new injury is hampering his ability to start.

City take on Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League tonight, live on talkSPORT, but Grealish will not be in the squad to compete in the Portuguese capital.

Guardiola commented on the problem ahead of the clash with Norwich at the weekend, saying: “He is injured.

“A bit what he had last season at Villa, less of course.

“Training after Brentford, he wasn’t good, we’re doing a test, he wasn’t ready today.”

Reports have suggested that the injury in question is a shin problem, something which could consequently keep the player out for up to a month.

Asked ahead of the Sporting clash if the injury was serious, Guardiola said: “I hope not. We’ll see.

“I don’t know if he will be ready for Tuesday. After Brentford we trained and he was uncomfortable.

“He couldn’t play today, but I hope in the next few days [he can].”

While hoping that Grealish can return to full fitness as soon as possible, City fans will still be confident that the depth-deep strength of the first team should see them through against the Portuguese side.
