Why can’t the Eagles leave Andy Reid? Chiefs head coach’s fingerprints are still all over Philadelphia

[ad_1]

All roads lead to Reid.

Andy Reid has been the Chiefs’ head coach since 2013, but long after leaving the “City of Brotherly Love,” Reid’s fingerprints are still all over the Eagles. Somehow, Reid has been something of an invisible hand in hiring the team’s three head coaches since then – and his current starting quarterback.

Chip Kelly, Doug Pederson, and now Nick Sirianni all have some sort of weird six-degree Reid separation: while not a “drive shaft” per se, there is some sort of Reid connection. between the last three head coaches and Reid, which leads to the question: Why can’t the Eagles just leave Reid?

Here’s Reid’s odd connection that’s been present since leaving as head coach after the 2012 season.

The Reid relationship? Followed Reid as the Eagles head coach in 2013

True to the theme of offensive innovation, Chip Kelly took over the Eagles in 2013 before being fired after the 2015 season, emerging from a pool of nearly a dozen coaching candidates to lead the Eagles into the post-era era. -Reid.

Kelly, an incredibly hot coach from Oregon, was praised for his advanced and quick attacks out of college, losing just seven games as head coach of the Ducks between 2009 and 2012. The NFL s more and more towards an academic style. game, and Kelly was, apparently, a good fit at the time.

As the Chiefs and Reid went their separate ways after 13 seasons together, the divorce was anything but acrimonious: in fact, Reid helped select the top coaching candidates for the vacant Eagles position during the process, including Kelly, who has eventually landed the job.

Kelly took the time to thank Reid during her introductory press conference.

“One person I want to thank, in terms of advice in this whole matter, is Andy Reid,” Kelly said upon hire. “And the fact that Andy contacted me and told me about his experience here just told me what this organization is all about. There isn’t a classier guy.

“When Andy texted me (Wednesday) when I accepted the job, I told him I had really, really, really big shoes to fill. And in typical Andy fashion, he said, “Just be yourself and you’ll be fine. “So I just want to publicly thank Andy, because that really told me about what this organization is.”

“I have a pretty close relationship with Andy where I can probably knock out some candidates if Andy felt they weren’t good enough in that sense,” owner Jeffrey Lurie said when searching for coaches. “That’s how close we are. I know what he thinks of Chip Kelly and it’s exceptional.”

While the Kelly era did not last long – and was not particularly successful – the Eagles once again pressed the Reid button on their next hire.

The Reid relationship? Chiefs OC under Reid (2013-15); Coach with the Eagles between 2009-12; played with the Eagles in 1999 as Reid’s QB

Record as head coach: 42-37-1, won Super Bowl 52

A decade after taking snapshots for the Eagles, Pederson was hired as the Eagles’ offensive quality control coach in 2009, eventually rising through the ranks to offensive coordinator, after Reid at the Chiefs in 2013.

In 2015, the Chiefs enjoyed a 10-game streak to end the season after starting 1-5, thanks in large part to Reid ceding the appeal duties to Pederson. Pederson would go for an interview and get the Eagles head coach job.

The Eagles hiring a disciple of Reid wasn’t exactly a shock, as the team tried to rekindle some of the consistency and ways to win they had under Reid. It would also prove to be quite successful. The Eagles would do something under Pederson that they hadn’t done under Reid: Win a Super Bowl.

Frank Reich

The Reid relationship? Served under Pederson as an OC between 2016 and 2017. Pederson was an OC for Reid between 2013 and 2015.

Record as head coach: N / A

Reich was the Eagles’ CO for their Super Bowl-winning season in 2016 under Pederson and remained with the team until 2017, eventually securing the Colts head coach job after Patriots CO Josh McDaniels stepped down. withdrawn at the last second.

Reich’s coaching career began with Indy, making jumps to Arizona and San Diego before landing with the Eagles in 2016. Indy’s current head coach brought a former colleague from San Diego with him. at the Colts: current Eagles coach Nick Sirianni.

While Reich never worked directly under Reid, working under a disciple of Reid is the best thing to do.

Record as head coach: 2-3

… Which brings us back to the current Eagles head coach.

Sirianni served under Reich as the Colts ‘offensive coordinator between 2018 and 2020, before eventually being hired as the Eagles’ head coach. Filling in Reid’s shoes (and to a different extent, Pederson’s) as a head coach isn’t the only connection between the two.

Coincidentally, he Sirianni had crossed paths with Reid before: he was fired by “Big Red” when Reid took over Kansas City in 2013. Sirianni then landed with the Chargers in 2013, working alongside Reich. Sirianni has mentioned in the past that he only met Reid by coincidence when he was given his traveling papers.

“Coach Reid was given the task of telling me that I was no longer working there,” Sirianni said recently. “So, you know, but he was awesome. It was actually a great conversation I had with him. And I really respected that he took the time to meet me, to tell me this. he had heard about me. “

And now he’s stepped into Reid’s old job in Philadelphia.

Wait… Jalen hurts?

The Reid relationship? Tracked down by the Chiefs, Reid before the draft.

Oh, but it doesn’t end with the coaching ranks.

The Eagles’ current starting quarterback was drafted by Philadelphia in 2020, but before being selected by the Philly front office, the Brass reached out to a third party for an opinion on the Oklahoma passer. Who was it?

You guessed it – Andy Reid.

According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, the Eagles asked for Reid’s opinion on Hurts and also had his opinion on drafting a quarterback while having an established starter on the roster. This is a situation Reid has faced on several occasions in Philadelphia (writing Kevin Kolb, signing Michael Vick with Donovan McNabb) as well as Kansas City (writing someone named Patrick Mahomes to sit behind Alex. Smith).

McManus also reports that the Eagles “have long enjoyed Reid’s opinion” – something that’s pretty obvious, if you’ve held it this far.

What a tangled web we weave.
