The Masked Singer Season 7 is in full swing, with Round 2’s second contestant unmasked this week.
The Hydra, Ringmaster, Miss Teddy and Armadillo faced off for the second time, with the worst performing singers competing for a final duel before the loser was unmasked.
As usual, the judges’ guesses ranged from the moaning (Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo) to the plausible (Penn and Teller and Gloria Gaynor). Ultimately, Hydra lost to Armadillo on vocals, and the judges had to lock in their final guesses for the three-headed character.
Ken Jeong went for Will Arnett and Zach Galifianakis, Nicole Scherzinger went for Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, Jenny McCarthy dithered for Bert and Ernie, while guest judge Nicole Byer guessed Penn and Teller.
On whom was the hydra The Masked Singer?
Though she’s just a guest star, Nicole Byer makes a play for that Golden Ear trophy – she’s got the Hydra identity figured out perfectly. The Hydra is none other than the magician duo Penn and Teller.
Of all the clues given this week on The Masked Singer, Hydra’s Mega Clue was perhaps the most telling (viewers speculated that any references Miss Teddy made to the song “I Will Survive” were a red herring). Hydra’s object was a deck of cards that were all jokers – the perfect fit for perhaps America’s most famous comedy magicians.
As you would expect from two illusionists, they tried to fool the judges by having the usually silent Teller take most of the voice. After being unmasked, Penn Jillette said of it, “Some people can recognize my voice, so we gave Teller more vocals so you might not recognize his voice as much.”
He added, “We just had a blast. What a solid blast! It was really fun to do.”
Before the hydra is unmasked, Newsweek released a guide to all the clues that Penn and Teller wore the three-headed suit.
Among the most telling clues (pun intended) was the ATM, that is, a TELLER ATM. Another telltale clue was the shark, which can be read three ways – in reference to Penn’s appearance in Sharknado 3the duo’s cameo on The simpsons (in which Teller is suspended above a tank of sharks), or one of their famous tricks in which Teller appeared to be thrown into shark-infested waters in a wooden box.
Other clues were a pair of water skis with “Miami” written on them (the two made separate appearances on miami vice), a beach ball with a bull on it (the couple hosted a show called Bullshit!) and a string of cup lights (the duo often perform a trick involving cups and balls).
WARNING: The following contains possible spoilers for Armadillo’s identity on The Masked Singer
As for the Armadillo, the judges’ guesses were Gary Busey, Jay Leno and William H. Macy. The clues, however, continue to point to Dog the Bounty Hunter.
In the final episode, he told the judges, “That’s what I do for a living. I kick ass.” The Mega Clue, meanwhile, was a motorcycle he called his “Wild Hog” – thankfully not an unfortunate reference to when Dog suggested that wild hogs might have eaten Brian Laundrie’s body, or the another time he said that Americans could use pig’s blood to defeat Daesh. Instead, it’s likely a reference to his time in the Devil’s Disciples biker gang.
The Masked Singer Season 7 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
