‘Who the hell is Sadio Mane?’ – Eintracht Frankfurt president taunts ex-Liverpool star ahead of Bundesliga opener against Bayern Munch but then suffers blows

Sadio Mane hadn’t even kicked a Bundesliga ball for Bayern Munich, and Eintracht Frankfurt president Peter Fischer’s wits backfired in spectacular fashion.

He was relishing the opportunity to face the Bavarian giants on Friday in Germany’s first top-flight game of the new campaign.

Frankfurt won the Europa League last season beating Rangers in the final and will face Real Madrid next Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup.

There seemed to be a sense of wellbeing around Fischer’s club, which finished 11th domestically last season, but that may not have been the case on Saturday morning.

Bayern lost Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona, who scored 60 goals last season, and very few expect new signing Mane, who joined Liverpool, to reach such a tally.

Nonetheless, he scored as Bayern put six ahead of their opponents.

Before the match, Fischer told broadcasters RTL and n-tv – with a cheeky wink – “Who the hell is Mane?”

The president then added: “By the way, we’ve always done relatively well with [against] Robert Lewandowski.”

His final statement is questionable, given that the prolific Polish striker scored 15 goals in 18 appearances against Eintracht, before his transfer to Catalonia.

Fischer went on to say that there will be “an exciting atmosphere in the stadium”.

“Of course we have a chance – if it ends in a draw, I won’t start crying either,” added the 66-year-old.

Eintracht manager Oliver Glasner, who worked with Mane at Salzburg in 2012, said he had always been a huge fan of the 30-year-old, continuing to watch him closely when he played for Liverpool.

“I’m happy that Sadio is in the Bundesliga now,” Glasner said in his pre-match press conference.

“I haven’t known him for ten years. He was just a young boy who was relegated from the French second to third division. He spoke only French but had enormous talent.

“He was very ambitious and had a clear idea. When we talked about learning German, he said he wanted to learn English because he wanted to go to the Premier League.

“I’m very happy for him. And for Bayern to sign a player from Liverpool is proof of the attractiveness of the Bundesliga that they were afraid of losing.”

And Mane seems to have settled in quickly judging by the celebrations.
