WBO’s mandatory challenger Usyk is now Joshua’s new opponent and the Ukrainian will pose an extremely difficult test.

Tony Bellew has claimed that AJ will NEVER face a better boxer than “The Cat”, but what do we know about him? talkSPORT.com takes a look …

Oleksandr Usyk: Profile

The 34-year-old man was born in Simferopol, Crimean oblast, Ukrainian SSR, on January 17, 1987, sharing his name with Muhammad Ali.

Usyk was an amateur footballer as a teenager and even played in the academy of former Ukrainian first division champion SC Tavriya Simferopol.

After switching to boxing, the southpaw continued to dominate the amateur ranks – registering 335 wins and just 15 losses.

Like Joshua, Usyk also won an Olympic gold medal at the London 2012 Games by winning the men’s 91kg boxing event.

Oleksandr Usyk: Save

Since turning pro, Usyk has wasted no time dominating the cruiserweight division – becoming the world champion in his tenth professional fight.

He won the WBO world cruiserweight title by beating Krzysztof Glowacki before unifying the weight class five fights later.

Usyk – who is undefeated in his 18 pro fights so far – retired Bellew in 2018 before moving to heavyweight the following year.

He finished Chazz Witherspoon in seven rounds on his Premier League debut before eliminating Derek Chisora last October.

Usyk will now try to emulate both Evander Holyfield and David Haye by becoming a two-division world champion if he takes the heavyweight belts from AJ.
