White Sox Name Lucas Giolito Opening Day Starter Vs. Tigers – NBC Chicago

The Giolito Sox opening day starter for the 3rd straight year originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

For the third straight season, the White Sox will hand the ball to Lucas Giolito to start the season.

The Sox named Giolito their opening day starter for Friday’s opener in Detroit. Dylan Cease and Michael Kopech will follow him Saturday and Sunday against the Tigers.

Giolito was the obvious candidate to start on Friday with news Lance Lynn will undergo surgery this week for a minor tendon tear near his right knee.

Lynn, who waited in line to start on opening day, could miss the first two months of the season due to injury.

Giolito will become the first White Sox pitcher to make three straight starts on Opening Day since Mark Buehrle (2008-11). He allowed two runs and two hits in 5 1/3 innings last season in a 4-3 loss to the Angels.

The right-hander went 11-9 with a 3.53 ERA in 31 starts last season, finishing 11th in voting for the AL Cy Young Award.
