White House responds as US identifies first case of omicron variant in California

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden, Dr Anthony Fauci, announced on Wednesday that the United States has its first case of the new omicron variant of COVID-19.

“We knew it was only a matter of time,” Fauci said.

The individual recently returned from South Africa to California and has been fully vaccinated.

“We feel good that this patient not only has mild symptoms, but in fact the symptoms seem to be improving,” Fauci said.

Fauci says this should further encourage Americans to protect themselves.

“Get vaccinated if you haven’t already been vaccinated. Get a boost if you’ve been vaccinated, ”Fauci said.

Faced with the new developments, the CDC and Biden are considering the possibilities of new protocols in the coming days.

“Not with closures or blockages, but with more widespread vaccinations, boosters, testing and more,” the president said.

Fauci says the administration will observe the data over the next few weeks and decide how to proceed.

“We’re going to get that information,” Fauci said.

But he says Americans already know how to stay safe while on vacation.

“With the family you know have been vaccinated, the people you know, you can feel safe without wearing a mask and having dinner, hosting a reception,” Fauci said.
