The NBA’s 75th Anniversary season will also feature the League’s 71st All-Star Weekend, headlining the Sunday showcase – the All-Star Game.
The league’s first All-Star game was first played at Boston Garden on March 2, 1951, in the league’s fifth season. The game features the league’s 24 best stars competing in an exhibition contest to cap the All-Star Weekend festivities.
Since that first All-Star Game in 1951, the match has only been played or conducted once. This was in 1999 due to a lockout between the league and the player’s association.
When is the 2022 NBA All-Star Game?
The 71st annual NBA All-Star Game takes place on Sunday, February 20 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, home of the Cavaliers, during the NBA 75th Anniversary season.
This was announced by League Commissioner Adam Silver on November 1, 2018.
It would be the third All-Star Game hosted in Cleveland, after two previous editions in 1981 and 1997. Coincidentally, these were also anniversary years – 1981 (35th season) and 1997 (50th season).
In fact, it was during All-Star Weekend 1997 at the Richfield Coliseum that the league unveiled its “50 greatest players”.
The game, which would be the fifth to be played under the new team captains roster format, will be broadcast nationally on Turner Network Television (TNT).
