What’s the point of finishing seventh in the Premier League? Man United still need result against Crystal Palace as West Ham aim for Europa League spot

Manchester United’s place in next season’s Europa League is still not assured after West Ham’s 2-2 draw with Man City.

The Hammers moved within two points of the Red Devils after Sunday’s stalemate with just one Premier League game to go.

West Ham need to beat Brighton this weekend and need Crystal Palace to see United finish in the top six.

But what will that mean for the team that finishes seventh and do Wolves still have a chance of playing European football next season?

talkSPORT.com has a look…

What’s the point of finishing seventh in the Premier League?

The seventh-placed team in the 2021/22 season will earn a place in the upcoming Europa Conference League campaign.

If West Ham had won the Europa League and finished seventh, there would have been no English side in UEFA’s third-tier competition.

This would also have been the case if Leicester had managed to win the Europa Conference League this season or if Crystal Palace had won the FA Cup.

But now either West Ham or Man United will end up in the Europa Conference League depending on who finishes seventh.

Wolves, meanwhile, can only end up in eighth place, which means there will be no European football at Molineux next season.

What was said?

David Moyes was asked if transfer targets would be dictated by the European competition West Ham find themselves in.

He said: “I don’t think, I hope we can at worst finish seventh.

“We have a lot to do, we need points because we are waiting for Wolves [in eighth] have a chance in at least one of their matches, so we need more points for ourselves.

“But I think European football for us would be great again if that happened.

“If we can make the Europa League it would be great to finish close to where we were last season. But I’ll take any of the European competitions and I’ll be delighted if we get back there.

“We will try to add to the squad if we can, but we have a very good squad at the moment.

“If we can sign a few more players we will, but I don’t think it matters whether we are in the Europa League or the Conference League, we will accept one or the other.”
