What time will State of Origin Game 1, 2022 actually start?

The first match of the 2022 State of Origin Series between the NSW Blues and the Queensland Maroons is program to kick off at 8:10 p.m. AEST in Sydney on Wednesday, June 8.

In recent years, the actual kickoff has been reasonably close to the scheduled time. However, before that, it was a long-running joke about the length of the scheduled kick-off, presumably to get more commercial spots for Channel Nine ahead of the game.

Last year, Game 1 was scheduled to kick off at 8:10 p.m. and it started at 8:11 p.m. while Game 2 was scheduled for 7:50 p.m. and started at 7:54 p.m.

Was it the NRL and Channel Nine colluding or was it more of a drop in advertising sales due to COVID?

Either way, we can still have fun predicting when kick-off will be.

The welcome to the country and the national anthem usually take place around five minutes before kick-off, so we should know by then if the match will actually start on time.

Will Origin 1 kick off within five minutes of its schedule like last year or will we see it drag on longer than commercials and cinema trailers before the main event?

As is tradition on The Roar, we have a launch bingo!

Be sure to indicate your expected start time in the form below and leave a comment with your thoughts. We’ll post the results of the State of Origin Launch Bingo poll approximately one hour before kick-off; and once the game has finally started we will also post the actual kick off time here.
