What next for Guinea? Uncertainty looms despite junta’s transition pledge

Issued on:

Last week’s military coup in Guinea saw President Alpha Condé arrested and detained. Colonel Mamady Doumbouya emerged as the face of the new military leaders. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres slammed the taking of power at gunpoint. Neighboring states followed his lead, adding their condemnation. Colonel Doumbouya announced there would be a government of national unity and a swift transition to democratic governance. More than a week later, the military junta has begun holding talks with political stakeholders. We discuss what’s next for Guinea.
