After a year of staying mostly at home and having half of our faces covered when we do venturing out, stacking on a face full of makeup looks more like a distant memory than part of our routines.
Trends started to change this way even before home orders in 2020, with many brands taking a ‘less is more’ attitude and prioritizing skin care and convenience over formulas and more. heavy blanket. The perfect example of this? Serum foundation, which you might have seen all over Instagram.
“Serum foundations, also known as ‘skin tones’ or ‘foundation fluids’ are a lightweight alternative to heavy cream foundations,” said Corey L. Hartman, founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama, at HuffPost. “They generally have an oil or silicone base to provide full coverage with less risk of pore clogging and a more elegant feel when applied.” Traditional foundations can also be made with silicone; however, many are made with powder, cream, or wax in the base.
Serum foundations provide less coverage than a traditional foundation, providing a more transparent look that can be used as a base under other products. “Think of serum foundations as a fine finishing paint to complement the glowing skin underneath, instead of a traditional foundation that acts more like a spackle to cover up skin imperfections,” Hartman said.
We’re going to try anything that looks sleek these days, and luckily there are plenty of silky options out there at all prices. Plus, serum foundations often include skin care benefits like SPF.
“Serum foundations hydrate, protect and repair the skin while providing coverage through active ingredients in such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and SPF,” said Hartman.
As with any makeup product, Hartman says, serum foundation can have detrimental effects on easily clogged or acne-prone skin – “especially if they aren’t cleaned out at the end of the day,” but can ultimately be a great option for highlighting natural skin rather than covering it up.
Some of Hartman’s favorite options come from Neutrogena, Ilia, and No7. We’ve rounded up her picks and our picks below.
