While in the town of El Turco, 100 kilometers from Santiago, the funerals of Ronald Tejeda -the Chilean tourist who died after being beaten and drugged in Rio de Janeiro- the police of the Brazilian city delivered news about the case.
Two women were arrested as main suspects. of participating in the murder of Tejeda and in the attack on Andrés Orellana, the other young Chilean involved and who underwent surgery this Monday. The detainees were identified as Davina Cristina de Moraes Melo and Tuane Silva da Costaalleged Brazilian sex workers who would have shared a drink with Chileans in the Lapa neighborhood and then together boarded a vehicle, hours before the men appeared abandoned in a ditch and with traces of several blows.
“They denied the crime. They say they met the boys, they stayed with them in Lapa and that was it. But we know they are lying,” said delegate Patrícia da Costa Araújo de Alemany, head of the Special Commission for Tourism Support. The suspects claimed that they took a taxi after the meeting in Lapa and then went to the Central do Brasil bar, to return to the Duque de Caxias area.
Davina Cristian’s lawyer, Carlos Alexandre, denied that his client was a prostitute and assured that she was in Lapa with her friend to “enjoy the night”, adding that the woman came to drink with the Chileans, but that they said goodbye at the station. “They had drinks, yes, in Lapa. They were drinks. She said that they met at the door of a nightclub, they stayed drinking and then they went to Caxias (on the outskirts of Rio)”, Alexandre pointed out.
However, and according to the camera records, that version would be denied since they were seen boarding an application vehicle with their Chilean friends.
Likewise, according to G1, Andrés Orellana, the Chilean who survived the attack and is recovering, recognized the women. He also pointed out that they drank two rounds of beer with them and from the moment they got into a car, they lost their memory.
The other relevant aspect was related to the type of drug they used to sedate their victims. It is a drug known asGood night Cinderella”, which is used for this type of illicit since they cause an extreme and almost instantaneous sleep, at the same time that they produce the call toanterograde mnesiaa state in which the victim does not remember the events surrounding consumption.
“The person is left passed out and vulnerable, so the attacker can take advantage of them. It is very common for the victims to hardly remember what happened afterwards and it is difficult for them to file a complaint,” said the executive director of the Brazilian Public Health Forum, Samira Bueno.
“These drugs are used because they produce extreme sleepiness and quickly, in addition to producing anterograde amnesia, with which the victim tends to forget events close to taking the drug, places, people,” he said.
In 2021, the toxicologist Rafael Lanaro pointed out to G1 that here “no specific substance is used”, but rather “a range that goes from anxiolytics to sedatives for veterinary use. They are depressants of the central nervous system, which inhibit mental activity and act mainly in the memory center”.
At the moment, police officers are still looking for the driver of the vehicle, which could be a fake taxi used by an illegal association. In addition, they also try to clarify how the events occurred, since these gangs usually drug the victims only to rob them, so the murder of the young engineer remains a mystery.
